The 'Be Your Own Farmer' (BYOF) Gardening Class Series is designed to empower you to grow your own produce, create a thriving organic vegetable garden and begin elements of homesteading. In 2020, we will offer a one day gardening course that will cover many aspects of gardening and preparing for a successful growing season. This class is for all levels of experience, whether you are just starting your garden, or want to improve your existing garden's yield and long-term sustainability. The series also includes classes on keeping bees and chickens and saving your harvest for winter. Start looking in your backyard, front yard, or local community gardens for a sunny spot, and we will help you take care of the rest! 


*Classes are designed for individuals 18 and older.

2019 Season Schedule

The Fundamentals of Gardening

Date: Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Time: 6:30-8 p.m.

Location: St. Elizabeth Greenhouse, 2 Convent Rd, Morristown, NJ 


Join us indoors to learn how you can prepare for a successful growing season while there’s still frost on the ground. In this session, Farmer Shaun will teach you how to start seedlings at home. We’ll discuss proper planting depth, soil moisture, and where to get supplies. We’ll send you home with a seedling starter kit that you can watch grow while waiting for springtime.


Next, we’ll explore steps to ensure your garden is ready for your seedlings with raised beds. Farmer Shaun will discuss the different types of materials you can use to build your own raised bed and which ones would most benefit your garden and home. We will also go over what kind of irrigation setups would best fit a raised bed.

A Professional’s Guide to Gardening

Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2019

Location: Urban Farm, 31 Hazel St, Morristown, NJ


With spring in full swing, let us show you how to keep your favorite veggies growing throughout the season. In this session, Farmer Shaun will give detailed instructions on how to use succession planting techniques in your garden to grow the perfect amount for your family all season long. You will learn how to properly plant your seedlings, time the next planting date, and tend to your seedlings when they are young. We’ll send you home with lettuce transplants for your own garden.


We’ll also share with you the tools and tips our professional farm staff uses to maximize outcomes and minimize strain. Gardening can be hard work, but we will review the garden tools used at the Urban Farm and the proper way to use them. We will also discuss maintenance and proper care. Come learn the best tools to use for the various gardening tasks.

Garden Critters Big & Small

Date: Tuesday, July 16

Time: 6:30-8 p.m.

For better or worse, creatures big and small are part of your garden. Learn from Farmer Shaun how to attract beneficial insects to the garden and to repel harmful pests. We’ll show you how important worms are to the health of your soil. During this session at the Urban Farm, you will learn which plants are beneficial to your garden and attract beneficial insects and keep away the pests. We'll send you home with your very own Borage plant to attract bees and other garden benefits.

Gardening through the Seasons

Date: Tuesday, September 17

Time: 6:30-8 p.m.

Some of our favorite vegetables grow during fall’s cool nights and warm days. In this session, you will learn how to turn your summer bed into a colorful fall garden and prepare for the winter months.


But what do to with all the extra produce? It’s a wonderful problem to have! We’ll share our tips and tricks for easy canning and food storage methods. We will be covering fermentation, freezing and canning. Join us for a hands-on session how to jar and store your vegetables and herbs for the fall and winter.
