PT Paid Seasonal Farm Hand 

14 weeks - May- August, 2021

$12/ hour; 25 hours/ week

Urban Farm Seasonal Farm Hand

25 hours per week (14 weeks - May – August 2021)

$12 per hour

 

Grow It Green is seeking a reliable individual to get involved in hands-on, land cultivation to assist with the growth of produce and community at the Urban Farm. The ideal applicant needs to be someone with interest in food systems, environmental stewardship and community relations. Our goal is to create an experience for the candidate working at Grow It Green that widens our view of why respectful land use is important and take into consideration Morristown needs to create a resilient, local food system. You will have the potential to learn and practice new skills including soil preservation, sustainable agriculture, water cycles, planting schedules, intercropping, safe harvest and storage procedures, team building, and small chicken flock production.

 

The area of our farm is approximately one acre, but a lot can be accomplished on a small piece of land. Produce from the farm is sold at farm markets including an on-site farm stand, and donated to local food distribution organizations such as food banks. Our mission is to provide a way with the BIPOC community to eat healthy while maintaining choice and dignity.

 

The Urban Farm is an educational, community farm.  We work with local schools and organizations to create a connection to nature for children including the students in the Morris School District. Applicants may have the opportunity to assist with field trips that involve lessons for students about where their food comes from, the importance of eating fresh food as part of a healthy lifestyle and inspiration to find new ways of growing fresh food to care for our growing, urban population.

 

Duties:

  1. Harvesting, weeding and planting vegetables

  2. Practice sustainable farming including soil and pest management along with maintaining beneficial insect habitats.

  3. Landscaping, which includes using a lawn mower and weed trimmer

  4. Assisting with CSA share management.

  5. Helping tend to a small flock of chickens

  6. Following and assisting with all guidelines to ensure safety of staff and visitors including but not limited to proper cleaning and storage of tools and COVID guidelines.

  7. Helping operate the farm stand every week

 

Qualifications:

  1. Desire to want to work on a farm.

  2. Desire to learn how to use small farm tools

  3. Desire to work hard to complete projects involving hands-on physical labor

  4. Desire to learn new trades like carpentry and plumbing

  5. Ideally comfortable using gas-operated tools such as a lawn mower and weed-trimmer

 

Qualified candidates must be:

  1. Dependable, organized, flexible, inclusive and have a sense of humor

  2. Willing to work outside in various weather conditions.

  3. Personable and enjoy working with a wide variety community members

  4. Able to work as a member of a team following all safety guidelines

  5. Able to work independently, with minimal oversight, and have a strong work ethic

  6. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus

  7. Interested in being involved in creating equitable access to healthy food for members of the community

  8. Ability to consistently get to work at the Urban Farm, 31 Hazel Street, Morristown, NJ and Greenhouse at St. Elizabeth University, 2 Convent Place, Morristown (a short distance from the Convent Station Train station)

 

Job Schedule

25 hours per week

$12 per hour

14 weeks of employment May – August, 2021

Tuesday – Saturdays

A typical work week will be flexible and dependent on weather, but expect to work between the hours of 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Tuesday to Friday and 8:00 am - 2:30 pm on Saturdays. Applicant will be asked to work two 8 hour shifts, one 3.5 hours shift Tuesday through Friday and 5.5 hours on Saturdays. Applicant will always have Sundays and Mondays off and can request one Saturday off per month.

This position is an outdoor job and requires the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, including very hot, very rainy, and humid weather.  On days where outdoor work is impossible, you may be asked to reschedule a workday. Grow It Green employment does not offer benefits or housing.  The accrual of paid sick leave of 1 hour for every 30 hours of work completed up to a maximum of 40 hours in a 12 month calendar year may be used after the initial 120 days of employment.
