Due to the pandemic, Alfresco is not possible to hold this year.  Cue the creativity! With a desire to safely bundle up the joy of farm fresh food and learning to cook for the children of the community, Grow It Green paired up this year with Kings Food Markets to create a Special Edition Kit for Kids with the theme, Eating the Rainbow. The kits, fully funded by Kings, were developed to inspire kids to make their own dish celebrating a rainbow of fresh foods. Included in each of the kits are tools and ALL the ingredients to make a Homemade Bean Dip recipe created by Kings Chef Maral. The kit includes:

  • 1 child sized apron

  • Fabric markers to personalize the apron

  • Child friendly knife

  • Wooden mini Kings cutting board

  • Measuring spoon

  • Educational placement

  • Crayons and stickers to decorate the placement

  • Bilingual recipe

  • ALL ingredients to prepare recipe

  • Kit includes fresh produce grown at The Urban Farm

You will enjoy a Youtube video created by Farmer Tina reading "Edible Colors" by Jennifer Vogel Bass, with Grow It Green teacher friend, Senora Kelly, who bring the lesson about Eating the Rainbow to us in English and Spanish.  The video includes Farmer Tina in her own kitchen preparing the Homemade Bean Recipe.  Whether you are able to get a kit or not, we welcome you to enjoy the video and buy the ingredients to make this dip at home with your families!

“Kings is excited to sponsor this exclusive kit developed with Grow It Green Morristown as an extension of our Act Against Hunger Initiative and to support the nonprofit’s commitment to hunger relief and nutrition education for children in neighborhoods where we have operated and supported the community for years.  Kids are going to love that the kits allow them to make this recipe at home and to use the tools for other recipes with their families,” stated Marisol Velez, Marketing Manager of Kings Food Markets.

“The Grow It Green team is incredibly grateful to Kings for making this amazing kit possible! How wonderful to safely bring the joy of eating farm fresh produce to the children we cherish in the local communities we serve. We miss the kids at the farm so we are bringing it to them in a fun way, while equipping and encouraging them to try new recipes,” says Lisa Alexander, Executive Director of Grow It Green Morristown.  “Many families are exploring growing their own food, and children are curious about learning to cook.  During these challenging times, children need to learn ways to make their own healthy recipes, and we wanted to encourage all children to make healthy choices and explore new flavors. “
