Alfresco on the Farm- Volunteer positions

We are seeking community members to help make our family friendly 9th annual farm fair, Alfresco on the Farm, a special event to come back together. The event is Saturday, September 18th, 2021 from 4-7 pm at our learning farm, The Urban Farm, 31 Hazel Street, Morristown. We are so excited to bring this event back- no ticket needed- due to the generosity of Kings Food Markets.

Urban Farm High School Internship- POSITIONS FILLED FOR 2021 season- thank you for your interest!

 

Grow It Green Morristown is seeking committed, hands-on high school interns to assist with the cultivation of produce and creation of sustainable, local food systems at the Urban Farm (31 Hazel Street in Morristown). The cultivated area of our farm is approximately 1-acre. All of our farm practices follow organic recommendations and emphasize overall sustainability. We plant over 30 different varieties of vegetables and maximize our growing space using companion planting techniques and many rounds of succession planting using practices with diverse, indigenous roots.

 

The Urban Farm is an educational center for the community and the 5,200 children of the Morris School District, making this job opportunity distinct from many typical farm jobs. This job will require self-confidence and a professional attitude. We operate a Farm Stand each Saturday and grow 1000s of pounds of produce to provide to local residents, food banks and soup kitchens.

 

The Urban Farm Interns will be responsible for assisting in food production, soil management, harvesting and helping coordinate the distribution of produce to Grow It Green Morristown’s various partners. Interns should desire to learn more about growing food and stewardship of land, as well as have a desire to work with the public. We are a community oriented nonprofit, as such we expect the intern to help with programs and events.

 

Duties include:

Hands on physical labor

  1. Basic care, feeding, and tending of a large-scale vegetable garden

  2. Using farm tools such as pruners, wheelbarrows, weeders, etc.

  3. Must be able to lift heavy loads (such as soil, compost, rocks, etc.)

 

Applicants must posses skills representative of mature, positive attitude:

  1. Dependable, organized, flexible 

  2. Can be flexible due to weather constraints (i.e. severe weather may change the work schedule)

  3. Must be personable, enjoy  working with all kinds of people

  4. Work as a member of a team

  5. A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently, with minimal oversight

  6. Be prepared daily to work (water, sunscreen, lunch on Saturdays, appropriate attire)

 

Other considerations:

  1. Must be a student enrolled in high school, or have just completed your senior year

  2. Work can sometimes be off-site, at our community garden or Greenhouse

  3. Spanish fluency is a plus

  4. On site portable restroom is available to employees and volunteers

 

 

Job Schedule:

This is a minimum wage ($12/ hour), part-time seasonal position, with work available from June through late October up to 15 hours per week. Our farm operates Monday through Saturday. During the internship, intern must work on Tuesdays and Thursdays (8 a.m. – noon) and Saturdays (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) each week. For applicants continuing in fall, weekday hours are in the afternoon. The deadline for applicants is Sunday, June 13, 2021.

 

This position is an outdoor job and requires the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, including very hot, very rainy, and humid weather. On days where outdoor work is impossible due to severe weather, we will reschedule work hours for a different day of the week.

Marketing Intern

Grow It Green Morristown seeks a detail-oriented and creative student to assist in organizational outreach, program promotion, and fundraising events.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Marketing Intern will be responsible for assisting the Development Manager and Marketing & Outreach Coordinator with weekly promotions and graphic design. The Marketing Intern may also assist with weekly newsletters, social media postings, event flyers, designing promotional materials, and press release distribution and gauging the interaction and impact. May also be asked to help coordinate fundraising events. Desired applicant has an interest in local food systems and gardening and be personable and self-motivated.

 

Specific duties:

  1. Create weekly e-blasts with updates for upcoming events

  2. Develop promotional materials for events and programs

  3. Update the organizational website & create content for social media

  4. Help with organizational fundraising events and classes

  5. Submit calendar listings to local online news outlets

  6. Opportunities to assist with grant writing

 

Qualifications:

  1. Strong writing skills

  2. Must be personable and enjoy working with diverse community members

  3. Competency in MailChimp or similar email program is a plus

  4. Graphic design (Canva or similar) is desired

  5. Understanding of social media is important

  6. Must be dependable, organized, flexible and have a sense of humor

  7. Attention to detail is a must

  8. A strong work ethic and the ability to work remotely if needed

  9. Ability to speak fluent Spanish is a plus

  10. Needs to be dependable and have own transportation and computer

 

Job Schedule and Requirements:

This is an unpaid part-time internship, from September through Dec. for the first semester. Students must be enrolled in a higher education institution and receive college credit for the internship. Preferred candidate will gain experience in the nonprofit local food sector.
